Not many childhood dreams persist from childhood to adulthood but my wish to be a medical doctor has remained unwavering. The only thing that changed over the years as my understanding of medicine broadened is what kind of doctor I would like to be. I did whatever I thought would bring me closer to that reality. Years later, I got accepted to study medicine at the prestigious Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria.
I was grateful for this opportunity and as with everything I do in life, I gave it my best effort. During that time I engaged in rural field visits to monitor national programs, setting up community-based organizations that fostered community ownership of health programs, immunization enlightenment campaigns and data collection which broadened my understanding of cultural and economic factors that impact health. My interest for research was piqued as I became familiar with the intricacies of running national health programs based on available data. I have always wondered how to choose between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics but thanks to programs like yours, I do not have to. I desire a residency program that provides a rich learning environment, commits to top-notch patient care and promotes diversity, teamwork, self-realization and professional growth in even in areas such as research. I hope to complete my residency training in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and subsequently focus on primary and preventive medicine and pediatrics. Armed also with the Masters in Public Health I am currently pursuing I look forward to serving the underserved and impacting humanity greatly.
