In the towns where there is abundance of migrant farmworkers, they should at least three translators that speak the patient’s language. Even though the clinics tries to avoid any ethnocentric norms and…
Low income and/or minority patients are less likely to receive preventative care due to lack of adequate insurance (medical coverage) and language barrier issues. Abuse, violence and alcohol and/or drug use/abuse is less likely to be discussion topics by doctors when caring for minority groups. Refugees from Sudan are less likely to receive/administer accurate full doses of prescribed medications due to history of shortages and/or limited health care. Spiritual powers and religious practices and beliefs shape how many cultures supplement their medical care. Complementary alternative medicines are used in many countries in place of western medical care.…
From these stories and class discussions, the refugee population mostly consist of women and children. In this case, this issue is also influenced by the issue of conflict and limited resources. One aspect of maternal and child health that is lacking in these refugee camps in this case, is the lack of pre- and post-natal follow up with health care professionals to monitor the state of the mother and newborn. In a study conduct in Kenya in 2008-2009, they found that only “18 percent of respondents used adequate maternal health care services” (Achia & Mageto, 2015). This means even Kenyan mothers who are welcome to seek maternal health care aren’t receiving the adequate care they need.…
Hispanics are one of the highest ethic groups in the United States that are uninsured. In addition, the Hispanic population is one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the U.S. The Hispanic population is estimated to increase over the next 25 years to 32 million out of a total of 72 million of the US population (Brice, 2000). The U.S. health care system is currently facing one of its most noteworthy social difficulties in decades in regards to its ability to provide access to medical services to the millions of Americans who have lost their health insurance coverage during the recession. The Affordable Care Act, was signed into law on March 23, 2010 for the purpose of reducing inequalities in insurance coverage and providing access to…
However, too many Americans are not afforded this luxury. Some Americans live in rural areas, like our nation’s Indians, and have to travel great distances to access a healthcare delivery system. Even though, some may have accessed to some kind of healthcare facilities they are often limited by a number of services and lack of resources that they have to properly care for these patients because of their lack of resources. Also, there are some Americans who are living below the poverty line in “rough” area, often deterring some providers practicing in those areas. Or those same American’s living in poverty may have access to healthcare; however, they cannot afford insurance or pay out of pocket costs at the doctor’s office.…
Vietnamese Immigration Impact on the United States According to the Vietnamese refugees, A huge challenge for them was escaping from Vietnam by boats and immigrating to United State where they didn’t know how to speak the language, and many of them lost a family member while immigrating to the United State. They had many difficulties immigrating to the United State. The United State government supported the vietnamese refugees by giving them shelter and many other things.…
Health care costs for undocumented immigrants are difficult to assess, particularly at the provider level. Most providers do not collect citizenship information on patients, and the costs of care for the undocumented are often classified simply as uncompensated care. Self-reported data or Emergency Medicaid expenditures are more reliable; these data sources suggest that costs for undocumented immigrants are generally lower than for US citizens and other immigrant groups. Undocumented immigrants rely heavily on safety-net health care providers, including community health centers and clinics, although costs attributed to undocumented immigrants at federally qualified health centers and clinics are difficult to estimate. Community health centers an important role in implementing the Affordable Care Act, including continuing to provide care to undocumented immigrants.…
The United States is a melting pot of numerous cultures and because of this is confronted with many challenges when it comes to providing health care and finding ways to help all cultures trust how it preforms its care. Hospitals want all types of people to know that they can come to their hospital and receive care for all types of conditions and injuries, but because of all the different types of cultures and their different beliefs about health care and medicine this can be a complicated task. The Hispanic culture is very prevalent in the United States and it continues to develop. “According to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates as of July 1, 2013, there are roughly 54 million Hispanics living in the United States.” (CDC, 2015)…
In this Scenario it talks about the effects that the Healthcare Reform Bill of 2010 has had on the American economy. Yes, there has been a tremendous amount of individuals who still lack the opportunity to be insured due to living below the poverty level or the lack of having the means, because even though it is offered from their employees the rates are still too expensive for them to be able to afford it for their entire household. Also, there is a stipulation clause that is set in place that puts an emphasis on whether or not one even is eligible for this new found insurance and if one does not meet that quota they are not eligible to even receive the new health insurance. Prior to 2010 this problem with the lack of coverage was in the…
People fear what they do not know. Ignorance breeds intolerance. In this very moment, intolerant hands and minds are bringing about the victimization and dehumanization of a citizen of this world. In most recent news, an executive order in the United States of America was made calling for a temporary ban on visas for individuals from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia; a 120-day suspension of the resettlement of all refugees; and an indefinite ban on the resettlement of Syrian refugees. Since the onset of the Civil War in Syria, over 13 million people have been identified as refugees.…
For many years, migrant health has been an issue nationwide. Mainly because migrants have been avoiding going to the hospital or avoiding seeking medical attention, partly because they fear deportation or immigration issue. As a (n) Licensed Practical Nurse in a migrant filled community, I see this issue first hand. I have been working in a community that has earned the name "Little Haiti", and many think that the name the community goes by is because it is partly filled with "Haitian", but I can honestly say that in this community this is not the case. There are plenty of nationalities in the "Little Haiti" community.…
Rajwinder, I agreed with you. Many undocumented immigrants may have fear and panic of being singled-out and intimidated as an illegal immigrant. They may have anxiety of being handed over to the police. With this type of fear such an individual will not seek for any medical help when needed, until it is out of control. Language barrier together with undocumented immigration status is a big threat to such an individual to seek for medical help at the adequate time.…
Additionally, refugees are unfamiliar with preventative measures, they wait until illnesses become severe before seeking treatment (Morris, Popper, Rodwell, Brodline &Brouwer, 2009, p. 535, para 4). One of the main goals for RHCM is to educate refugees that they have options for health care, whether they receive benefits from their employers or from Medicare/Medicaid, Passport, SSI, or K-chip. Refugees have a knowledge deficit regarding the US health care system, health care, and mental health options. Additionally, refugees have a knowledge deficit regarding transportation options in the US in order to arrive at clinics and…
In the case of immigrants uninsured those involved with the care of the patient would require the patient and their family. In addition, others involved with the care of the patient will include doctors, therapy providers and social worker/case management (Guido, 2014). The course of action provided to the patient must be reviewed to ensure they are being provided with the right tools to guarantee their overall health. As with the illegal immigrants their course of actions beyond the hospitals are limited. It is imperative that the nurse work with the social worker/case management to provide information to the patient by directing them to the needed resources outside the hospital for follow up care.…
Concerns of economic consequences and security threats are the most common defenses for those who fear the benign refugees. Although admitting refugees into the United States would come at great monetary costs, the expenses of military intervention is even greater. ISIL related operations costed $6.5 billion since 2014. With the same amount of money, the U.S. could offer protection for a fair share of refugees for over 3 years. Paying for refugees would not only be less expensive, but more successful than increased military intervention in the Middle East.…
