Medical Controversy: Cloning And Gene Therapy

Bioethics in Medical Research Through the recent years, there has been a lot of controversy on the topic of medical bioethics. They main topics inside of medical bioethics are cloning and gene therapy. Some people agree with cloning and gene therapy saying that it will make the world better and it will help people and society. On the other hand, some people disagree and say that this is unnatural and will mess up society. Throughout all the research I have done, I have come to the conclusion that I disagree with cloning and gene therapy. It is a good idea, but it can mess up reality. There are two types of gene therapy treatment: Somatic cell gene therapy and germline therapy. Somatic cell gene therapy includes gaining blood cells from a person with a genetic disease and then inject a normal gene into the defective cell. This type of gene therapy cannot be passed down generations (from parent to child) because it does not affect the egg and sperm cells. Somatic cell gene therapy needs to be done a few times to be permanent in a patient. The other type of gene therapy is germline therapy. Germline therapy takes place in the reproductive cells. It is the genetic modification of germ cells that will pass the change on to the next generation, so it becomes hereditary. This type of gene therapy only has to be done one time to be permanent. Pros for gene therapy: Its can help get rid of diseases of mutations. It can help save lives by changing the structure of a persons genes. It can make people smaller so we take up less food, energy, fuel, fabric, shoes, furniture, etc. Also, it can give us cat-like eyes so we can see better in the dark and we won't have to use as many lights.
