Mrs. January is a 73-year-old woman, and she went to have a neurological evaluation because her brother has noticed memory impairment within the last three years. She had a husband who passed away in 1980. She never had any children. Her brother has noticed that her memory impairment has gradually progressed. Other family members have said they have noticed a decrease in her housekeeping and also she has forgotten to pay her bills. Mrs. January has an elevated blood pressure, but she has never taken medication. She is a well-groomed woman and is alert and friendly. Her neurological exams were normal. Her speech wasn’t the greatest. She would easily forget words and say words like “things” and “stuff.” She did know her name, but she did not

For her to get physical therapy may help her stay ahead of it. Then, she might not lose so much physically. If she got occupational and speech therapy started, it can help her speech progress, and occupational therapy would help her be able to continue to get herself ready and do things around the house. Maybe getting her involved in Meals on Wheels or some program like that would help. It will take the stress off of the family and also she would not have to worry about her meals. I feel that if Meals on Wheels is bringing her food, then her family would know that she is eating.
I would tell the family that she doesn’t need to leave home just yet. It seems like she can still get herself ready and do most things. I would suggest hiring home health to come in and set up medications. I would also suggest that perhaps a family member should take over her finances and hire someone to come in and clean her house. January’s brother to be with her and spend time. Also, if things were to change with her disease, then it may be time to think about other options. I would refer him to nursing homes with memory care in his area then he can be still with her and close to her. Also, tell him to stay in close contact with her doctor. I feel that this is important for Mrs. January because she does have high blood pressure and also is on medication. If something were to change in her medicine or if she were to react to it or it doesn’t seem to be working anymore, then it could be time to return to the
