Reflection On Consumerism

My interviewee was my grandfather Nick Loizou, he is an eighty year old male living in Canada, but was brought up in Cyprus and England. I learned that in the era where my interviewee grew up, a lot of advertising was person to person interaction. I found this very intriguing because it is very different from the society we live in today, in present day people are so consumed with phones, it’s very interesting to see how times have changed. I learned that consumerism was more divided and directed at a certain audience, according to my interviewee as a foreigner with little money he felt completely out of place. In hindsight even though I explained how consumerism was less apparent in this era, it was definitely still apparent, this quote helps explain that “The more wants that are satisfied, the more new ones are born” (Holt, pg 21, 2000), because my interviewee is still a person when he moved to England and got a taste of consumerism the concept of buying something stood in his mind. When you move places especially into a consumer market like England, your mind learns to adapt to advertising because it is very apparent and there is in simple terms, more items to buy. “These advertising codes is critical to our daily routine of reading and deciphering ads” (Holt, pg 81, 2000), the more advertising you see the more consumed with it you become.

Something else to take into consideration is another reason my interviewee became consumed with consumerism is because it is human nature to want to fit in, especially when you go to a new place and you want to be considered acceptable in society, this is helped proven with this point “ours is a society in which one of the principal social goal is a higher standard of living” (Holt, pg 21,
