Violent media as entertainment is evident in our everyday lives, as seen in films, television, radio, newspapers, internet, music or any other type of media. For over half a decade, the degree to which media violence influences aggression and violence has been intensely debated. Countless researchers have found a direct relationship between media violence and aggression and studies have come to the same conclusion; undoubtedly, these studies have presented clear evidence that exposure to media violence promotes aggressive behavior. Additionally, some also argue that exposure a great amounts of violent portrayals can damage and persuade children that violence in the real world is more violent than it really is; which in turn may possibly contribute …show more content…
The mental influence that violent video games emit results in aggressive behavior and have on wide range of gamers, including children, are detrimental. Constantly reported, a majority of the video games available depict graphic illustrations, ranging in forms from mild to extreme. Video games can be the most detrimental type of media because most individuals learn more actively. With video games, individuals are more actively engaged than in, for instance, passively watching television. As a consequence of becoming more actively engaged in violent video games, gamers are more likely play and identify with the violent person in the video game because they are provided a perspective. On another note, impressionable children are even more likely to identify with the character in a video game because they are still developing a sense of right and wrong. Usually, when gamers identify with a violent character, they are more probable to display a more aggressive behavior. Not does this contribute to aggressive behavior, but most video games, including violent ones, also rewarding the individual directly. For example, many games do this by presenting bonuses, gifts, or points, being promoted by permitting them to proceed to the following level, or awards in many forms ("Effects of Games on Behavior?”). Naturally, children are more naïve and easily influenced; therefore, they turn to mimicking what they observe and perceive as right, due to their unfamiliarity of the distinction between right and wrong. As video games have become more popular, children mimicking aggressive and violent things they see leads to aggressive and violent behavior. For instance, a study in a medical journal by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ had released a statement based on a study in 2009, which stated that, “Playing violent video games has been found to account for a 13% to 22% increase in adolescents’ violent behavior … ” ("Video Games Cause Violence?"). As a result, the child who has been exposed to the violence seen in video games may be easily influenced and imitate what he or she had been exposed to, and in turn become violent, aggressive, and desensitized. Moreover, it is teaching them that acting aggressively is an appropriate way to handle situations.
