    a. Experimental group/pg. 132: the group of subjects in an experiment who are exposed to the independent variable. When watching China’s Lost Girls, it can be said that the whole documentary was focused around the study of American parents traveling across national borders in order to adopt Chinese baby girls. The causation for this ‘experiment’ could be traced to many different reasons; sterile parents who are unable to rear a biological child themselves, lonely married couples who have raised their own children already and want to do so again, or simply those families who want to add diversity and culture into their lives by way of a new Chinese female family member. Regardless of the causation, the soon-to-be parents are reaching out to…

Big Mama Documentary Analysis – Tracy Seretean, filmmaker The 2000 documentary Big Mama covers an 18-month span chronicling the battle an 89-year-old grandmother, Viola, has in keeping her grandson, Walter, out of the foster care program. Walter’s mother was an addict who delivered him while she was under the influence, only to disappear completely from his life shortly after. Subsequently, while on his deathbed, Walter’s father, begged his mother to take care of Walter, though it would seem that Viola was unable to secure custody of Walter immediately following the death of her son. Inspiration for the documentary came from journalist Erin Texeira who wrote that Viola struggled to obtain custody of, the then four-year-old Walter after he “had…

The first thing we did at Feed my Starving Children was to watch a video about all of the starving children in the locations that we would be helping. I think that seeing them and seeing how bad and famined they looked really showed us the truth. We often only think about the people in our own country or the people that we see every day. When we are eating lunch or going out to dinner we do not think about the hungry people in other countries. After that we split up into groups that represented different countries that we would be feeding.…

In the case of Bonnie in the CBS television show “Mom”, she is not ready to forgive her estranged mother who wants to return into her life. I will be analyzing the scene when Bonnie first meets her mother, Shirley in the cafe with her daughter Christy and the initial confusion and anger she experiences. Through the use of code switching, and hurtful language, Bonnie illustrates her lack of empathy towards her mother 's return, she also displays her anger through the nonverbal cues of vocalization and emblems demonstrating that apologies don’t heal childhood trauma.…

The documentary “Tapped” sheds some light on the dangers of bottled water. One of my favorite points the documentary talks about is how the thousands and thousands of plastic water bottles are affecting us and our world. Yes, while bottled water may be convenient for us humans who are always going and going, it's not very convenient for the rest of the world. Our environment was not grown with plastic. Plastic is not nature based, therefore it is not organic, meaning it can’t decompose, or give anything to the environment except pollution, death, and trash.…
