There are a range of factors, which will affect the way the audiences are positioned with different responses. Media texts are polysemic and they contain a range of meanings.Audiences are active rather than passive. They will use the media text for different reasons. The producers of the media text will encode messages to an audience, which the audience will decode according to Stuart Hall a culturual theroist the audiences will respond in three different ways, preffered, negotiated and oppositional, the factors that affect the way they respond are their age, gender, ethniticty, cultural competance, situated culture and other factors.

Moreover, for the Cosmopolitan magazine feauturing Selena Gomez for the April issue appearing as the central image she is overly sexualised with cover lines and discourse. This includes phrases such as 'Glamour' and 'How to have firm thighs? and 'How to be in a relationship?'. Furthermore, these texts will lead to different responses. This magazine is an informal mode of address and through the chatty and collaquial langugae it makes the readers feel involved. An audience's situated culture may affect the way they respond to a media text. An audience may like the lifestyle of the magazine as it tells the readers how they should live their lives clearly and it makes them feel involved. Therefore, they would have a preffered reading, where they agree with the messages contained.
