The first presentation that caught my eye was “Media Portrayal of Women (ages 18-35) Through Advertising.” According to the Advertising and the End of the World outline the media is dominated by advertising. Advertising tells us how to behave, good vs. bad, values, how to be happy, what society is, and what the future will be like. The media portrays women as “sex objects.” Various advertisements give women a false image of what society wants them to look like. The second presentation that interested me was “Modeling Agencies.” During the presentation they talked about a Victoria’s Secret model who quit modeling because she felt violated. She was being paid to strip down to the bare minimum and take photos for men to fantasize over.

Girls are more likely to play with something more feminine like Barbie’s, while the boys are more probable to play with something more masculine like Legos. Boy toys tend to associate with destruction or action and girl toys tend to associate with things that are pretty. Down the road this will make children more stereotypical and kids will no longer believe that everything is open to all people and not just boys or girls. All three of these presentations I talked about had to do with women and girls and how their space is invaded. In one of our class discussion we talked about female genital mutilation and the effects it has on women and girls within our society. FGM is defined as all the procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injuries to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. There are four major types of procedures, these include a clitoridectomy, excision, infibulation, and pricking, piercing, incising, scraping, and cauterizing the genital area.
