It is typically assumed that social media is directly responsible for this. However, this stress is more related to the increased awareness of stressful situations in others’ lives across whatever social media platform is being used. This means that the negativity is a result of specific, individual events or people within the social network rather than the social network itself. There is no question that stressful situations in the lives of people close to someone can cause that person to then be impacted in a negative way. It can be assumed that whether that information was heard of from within a social network or otherwise, that the outcome would remain the same regardless. Just as well, in the same way that being aware of the problems of loved ones can increase stress levels of users, being aware of the problems of more distant friends or perhaps even enemies can in fact decrease stress levels. As insensitive as it sounds, it makes sense, as learning about the misfortunes of others, especially those that are distant to a person, can sometimes be a reminder that things could be worse, which can be a relief to some (Social media, 2015). Social media helps in many ways, such as helping kids do better in school by helping students stay connected with each other. Educational social media sites allow for this, as well as improved teacher student interaction.
