Media Narcissistic Behavior

Decent Essays
I think the media and television have made a huge impact on the rise of narcissistic behavior, as well as social media. It seems that so many people are worried about how many likes they get on their photos, or looking like celebrities. There are millions of young girls getting plastic surgery and fillers to look like Kylie Jenner and the Kardashians, and they don't even look like that. What people forget is that these people have teams to make them look the way they do every day, and they pay a lot of money. Normal people do not look like this, and there shouldn't be so much pressure to try. Shows like Catfish show just how shallow people can be. They fall in love with a person on social media, and as soon as they see that the person they

There are trend setters, we want to dress like this person, we want our lips to look like that person’s lips, people go to extremes to get plastic surgery done. And kids are starving themselves because since Kim Kardashian has a perfectly flat stomach, then they also need a flat stomach. This is affecting not only adults, but it is also affecting our youth. It is because us adults are allowing our children to have social media at such a young age. This begins to threaten their lives at this point.…

Time magazine’s 2006 issue featured everyone as their Person of the Year. This created controversy because an honor like this was once reserved for people who had actually accomplished something important, not the average citizen who has access to the internet. Lakshmi Chaudhry, the author of Mirror, Mirror on the Web, states “So it’s easy to miss the editorial sleight of hand that slips from the “I” to the “we,” substitutes individual self-expression for collective action and conflates popular attention with social consciousness” (158). According to Chaudhry, narcissism is becoming more prominent in society. She believes it is preventing social change because people are only concerned with their own social status.…

“Good Country People” illustrates that dismissing sin instead of accepting it leads to great loss. Hulga believes she is much more intelligent and cultured than her mother and those around her, especially because of her choice to be atheistic. When a good country Bible salesperson, Pointer, arrives, she believes she can easily trick and corrupt him, yet even when he tricks her, she attempts to reaffirm her spiritual position by criticizing his, stating “‘you’re a fine Christian! You’re just like them all - say one thing and do another. You’re a perfect Christian” (184).…

Recent generations have become so familiarized with new technology, which they tend to get caught up with social media. The definition of a Narcissist is, “a person who has an excessive interest in or admiration of themselves.” Becoming so caught up with yourself, creates a large lack in good judgment for avoiding dangerous situations and you forget to attend obligations that you normally would attend. Many young relationships do not stick, because of the lack of commitment. The morals are lost.…

Our perception and view of people and events is largely influenced by the media. We may not realize it, but the first thing that we naturally start to do is label a person of first time seeing. For example, a new student has just registered to your school, thousands of adjectives pop up in our mind like: popular group, blonde, mean, pretty, and rich. It’s society (media) that defines our perceptions of people because not all blonde, popular girls are mean nor are all Muslims terrorists. When the media starts giving the notion that beauty is blonde hair and blue eyes or that all black people are gang members it sticks to our head and our judgments reflect on it.…

Media Shaming, Press Pacification, The Power Elite and Socialization The integration of views of misrepresented communities have been determined in many instances as ways of promoting collective identity in the process of normalizing their experiences within a given setting. However, the kind of globalization that is taking place today works ona different level. On the one hand it supposes that the necessity of promoting diverse views is informed by the idea that people are interacting on a larger scale. This is set on a scale that is connected to the commercialization of the global village.…

A true narcissist is someone who so invested in themselves that they are oblivious to the opinions of other people. I would argue the opposite of that Jonathan has stated, that in fact social media and technology awakens our dormant insecure self. The instagram pages we follow and the facebook personalities that youth idolise are all immensely popular. Driving the feeling that if we cannot crack a certain amount of likes, or views on our social media material, that we are not up to society's standards. This exists to the point that regardless if you like the photo or not you will pull it down, to avoid the embarrassment of being socially irrelevant.…

But they also believed that their close friends continued to see them as funny, attractive, conscientious and intelligent, when in fact those friends — while they might once have had those impressions — no longer did. Narcissistic behaviors are shown through obsessed behaviors internally. They are concerned with their image physically, and their reflection within the world around them. The rise of narcissism amongst millennials or “The Generation Me” people who were born in the 1980’s and 1990’s who are now on social media vs. face-to face conversations has been studied by comparing…

Images of thin, beautiful women and muscular, wealthy men form stereotypes for many that have led to a decline of self acceptance. Many of the images portrayed by the media shape individuals to think that thin is beauty and most will attempt by all means to achieve it. Teenagers (mostly women) on social media experience body shame, body dissatisfaction, weight dissatisfaction, lower body esteem and higher levels of depression. The internet and other similar sources like magazines can have a negative effect on the mindset of a human being. For example, many people at a certain point in their life has looked into a magazine and wondered why they were not created or structured like the celebrity shown.…

In Newman’s words, mass media “tell us the type of person we ‘should’ be” (Newman, 2010, 154). The media broadcasts ideal images of bodily perfection and physical beauty that appeal to the human eye. Photo shopped images are promoted and glorified through social media which can correlate negative thoughts and feelings about body images for many individuals. In fact, “time spent on social media can exacerbate poor body image and/or disordered eating” (Vogel, 2015). Media allows stereotypes, or overgeneralized images or ideas of a particular trait, behavior, or characteristic that reflect on some identifiable group, to formulate (Newman, 2010, 353).…

Media manipulation, a great way to convince people that you are right and your competition is wrong. A way to sell your products in the way that if you are thirsty, you want to buy a Coca-Cola. An awesome tool which only few can use, because of its scarcity in the world.
