Media Influence On Elderly Culture

Decent Essays
The media is used consistently in our generation ranging from social media to advertising, and the way we portray the elderly today is uncivil. Most people nowadays feel elders require too much attention and are outdated for today’s society. For example, instead of taking care of a fellow relative that is decrepit, we tend to send them away to a retirement home so we are not weighed down by their sluggish lifestyle. However, where would our world be today if it was not for the elderly and what they contributed towards our early culture? I believe they deserve more of our respect because of their experiences they have faced throughout their lifetime. We oversee their hardships and struggles they have suffered to create a better world.

Also, numerous studies provide evidence that older adults’ needs are changing. Grant (2001) postulated that older adults are now keenly aware of ‘the benefits of maintaining a physically active lifestyle and how such behavior can contribute to quality of life and the feel better phenomenon” (p. 778). Thus, stereotypes of older adults of the past are now viewed as irrelevant as shown by older adults that live “longer lifespans, delayed retirement, and economic realities” (North, 2015, p. 994) that are in contrast to the realities of…

Sociological Assessment As I was reading about all the sociological problems older adults endured. It saddened me to know that we just discard them as if they are just useless. We need to change that negative stigma about the elderly population, change our mindsets as a society because at the end, we will all have to go through that stage of life. The present is a sociological assessment for Bessie Delany.…

This clearly shows the lack of knowledge available to students and the public about the elderly population and what they are capable of. More often than not, people tend to forget that age may affect the health and cognition of an individual but that does not limit them in their ability to live a good life where they can still enjoy themselves. Because of the public’s perception of an older person’s age, elders are at a higher risk of being perceived as incompetent, being abused or…

In the American society, there are many myths about aging. Novak stated, “Some years ago, Robert Butler coined the term ageism to describe these negative attitudes toward aging (3).” These negative attitudes toward aging come from common sources such as, the media, magazines, advertisements, literature, and popular culture (23). Sadly, these same platforms are also being used to stigmatize these issues and play a role in the difficulties of social connectivity. Our society, I believe, disregards the needs of our elderly because society is slowly growing into a fast paced bureaucratic one, highly dependent on new technology. In a bureaucracy, everything is efficient and strictly regulated. While this may be a business oriented term, I believe that bureaucratic tendencies seep into our daily lives, with many people concerned with getting as much done as possible as the quickest pace. Unfortunately, this lifestyle excludes elder members of society, who tend to…

This portrayal of elderly in the media can not only affect a young person’s attitude toward the elderly, but can also affect the way that the elderly view themselves. The media caters mainly toward children, teens, adolescents, and adults but not necessarily toward the elderly. The lack of media attention or exposer on the role of the elderly in society has made them almost nonexistent and leaves the impression that the elder generation does not matter. They no longer have a significant contribution to society. On the other hand, when the elderly are portrayed through the media, we often find a false depiction is made.…
