Media Influence On Body Image

In the late twentieth century, media and ways of advertising became widely popular. Many advertisements included women and men being portrayed as objects. These women and men that were displayed in the media were used to sell products and often had a certain look. The media has a projected ideal on the definition of beauty and body image. Media tends to depict these images in advertising brands such as Abercrombie and Fitch and Victoria’s Secret. Advertisements suggest that the ideal women be tall, thin with perfect skin and men need to be tall with chiseled abs. This is highly unlikely in today’s society to achieve and causes dissatisfaction with one’s self which could lead to individual problems. Body image is negatively influenced by the images we see in media, advertisements and magazines. …show more content…
Dissatisfaction with one’s body leads to body disorders and other issues. In the article “Media Influence on Body Image” Colleen Thompson states, “The National Eating Disorder Association reports that one in every 3.8 televisions [sic] commercials conveys an “attractiveness message,” telling viewers what is considered attractive.” In many advertisements, advertisers hire attractive women and men to sell their product because they know people will buy the product in order to look like that person and get the same results. Media creates an illusion because often times the individuals who have been casted for that role are photo shopped. Young girls and boys approaching adolescence see these people in the media and begin to feel uncertain with one’s self. Around this age is when they feel the most pressure from society because they want to live up to what society is portraying.
