Media Effects Theory Analysis

The media effects theory we studied this week was uses and gratifications. The uses and gratifications approach assumes that individual differences among audience members cause each person to seek out different messages, use those messages differently, and respond to them uniquely (Bryant, Thompson, and Finklea, p.122, 2013). My definition of uses and gratifications is that people use various forms of media for different things that they react to in their own way. Uses and gratifications is a interesting theory because it's so personal and varies between each person. One idea I found interesting was that a person's social and psychological makeup is as responsible for media uses and effects as are the media messages themselves (Bryant, …show more content…
The personality of various individuals has an effect on what they watch and what shows up on their social media feeds. Therefore, that has an effect on the person just as the media message itself does. Another idea that I found interesting was the gratification-seeking and audience activity model because particular kinds of gratifications sought by the viewer, as well as the viewers' attitude, determine the viewer's attention to the content of those messages (Bryant, et al, p.124). I think this is interesting because I can relate it to my life in many forms of media, such as TV shows, social media, and music. There are certain TV shows that members of my family will put on and I won't be interested so I turn to my phone for entertainment. Also, I constantly flip through radio stations if the songs I don't like are playing. I find it interesting that as soon as we aren't interested in something from the media that we seek out another form of media to entertain ourselves and find gratification. The third idea that I found interesting was the uses and dependency model because it proposes that certain elements in a media system cause people to use and depend upon the …show more content…
The results showed that students were mostly embarrassed to admit the amount of time they actually spent watching reality TV shows, and that it was an excellent escape from the pressures of life as well as live vicariously through the lives of people featured in the programs (Bryant, et al, p.131). This study reminded me of escapism because the students would use television programs to forget reality and the stress of life. Uses and gratifications applies to a current new media problem because of iphones and the media that comes with them. Majority of people have some version of the iphone, which comes with the ability to access social media, music, games, and movies/television, etc. with the touch of a button. In today's society, we depend on our phones to communicate with others via text, call, video chat, or instant messaging. Also, we depend on them for information, entertainment, escapism, play, and other societal factors. Without our phones, we feel lost, get upset, or even feel anxiety about not having that connectivity to the world around us that we feel our phones give

The Pop Culture Scare The media and pop culture have influenced society in more ways than we know. Everything that society does, thinks, feels, or believes, comes from social media or a standard of pop culture. For example, the “YOLO”, “haters gonna hate”, or any other of the ridiculous basic sayings portrayed by the media or news, are slowly consuming young people’s minds and actions. The worldly things in the media are influencing young people negatively by inequality between the sexes, loss of creativity and originality, and decreases trust in the media world.…

From early art in the 1600’s to the emergence of television, the media has had a rapid and unstoppable invasion on lives. Media overwhelms society with drama and entertainment. In “Supersaturation, or, The Media Torrent and Disposable Feeling” by Todd Gitlin, he asserts paintings were what television is today: entertainment. In the 1600s, these paintings were passed down from generation to generation, and today, television shows rarely last two seasons. Gitlin feels as though the media desensitizes people, and therefore, modern day feelings are “disposable.”…

The media effects theory we explored this week was cultivation theory. Cultivation theory is a theory that developed as one attempt to explain the influence of television on its viewers (p. 109, Bryant, Thompson, and Finklea, 2013). Also, cultivation proposes that over time, heavy viewers of television develop or cultivate views of the world similar to what they see on television, generally a "mean" world filled with violence and crime (p. 109, Bryant, et al, 2013). My definition of cultivation theory is a theory used to measure the effects television (mostly violence and crime) has one the viewers who watch it heavily. In the chapter on cultivation theory, one main idea that stood out to me was that people who watch a lot of television…

However, living in a mediated world, representation in the media is significant to the reflection of individuals as well as introducing viewers to diverse groups of society. Television as a mainstream medium shapes the worldview of its audiences. One main group that still seems to lack representation is the LGTBQ+ community. Without representation, a queer viewer might get the feeling of non-existence or importance.…

The theory has emerged as a reaction against passive mass communications theories that concluded that consumers of media are passive and media can be used to alter and manipulate audiences. The U&G approach on the other hand believes that audiences are active participants who choose certain media outlets because they fulfill certain needs and gratifications. The theory has been widely applied to study why users or media consumers select certain media channels rather than others. Research on the needs, uses and gratification obtained from television, radio, the internet and more recently social media I is…

Media delivers us with news and information not only from our country, but from around the globe. A main section of our news is political. The media delivers us information about everything from political parties, elections, MP’s, to and decisions made. The famous quote by the CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite paints a picture of what the news networks and corporations are there to do; ‘Our job is to only hold up the mirror, to tell the public what is happening.’ But that is only a slim part of what they actually do.…
