My opponent brings up some very interesting points. First, she brings up point that violence in the media desensitizes children and increases tolerance of violent behavior. However, the theory of sensitization disproves this proposition. According to psychologists Richard Harris and Fred Sanborn, sensitization is the reverse causal effect of desensitization. When viewers experience violent games or movies, they react strongly and are traumatized the event and they are less likely to imitate that behavior.
In a study conducted by researchers, Tamborini, Stiff, and Heidel (1990), found a link between empathy and violence. They found that when people were exposed to graphic violence they developed a strong connection with the character’s lives
