Media Corruption In The United States

Improved Essays
When you watch the news, do you ever question what they are telling you, or do you not even think about it because that is the single source for the information being told? Interestingly enough, the government has actually been controlling the media and the way the media conveys the news since 1917 when JP Morgan hired high ranking news managers. They were asked to determine the most influential newspapers and media outlets in America, and buy them out. They did this so they can control the daily press and media of the United States. Even today the government can somewhat control what the people of America hear and what they believe is factual.
Just one example of the media corruption by the government is the method of media consolidation.

In recent years, there have been accusations against the media regarding how it informs us of news. There have also been accusations against public officials accusing them of stretching the truth or fudging numbers up. These misrepresentations lead the public to develop a distrust of their government and the media. People are starting to wonder if they’re being told the whole story. Like the Nazi’s Joseph Goebbels, those within the U.S. government today understand propaganda intuitively, and it is used on a daily basis to sway public opinions on elections, support war engagement, and to further delude critical thinking skills from those who consume it. " Critics see the greatest failing of the modern corporate mass media as that it daily bombards its audience with facts, figures, and statistics, it rarely attempts to bring coherence or any meeting at all," stated journalist Jim Marrs, author of The Rise of the Fourth Reich (Marrs, 342). In a sense, the media would report the story, but only a fraction of the facts are released to the public. Regarding how consistent the media is, it is not designed to tell the public what to think, but rather subtly persuade them what occupies the back of the corridors of their minds. The public’s thoughts are filled with images of violence and how dangerous the World is.…

The United States have a lot of laws that dictate what we do in our everyday life whether we like it or not but one of the majors laws that benefits us is the first amendment which gives us the ability to express openly what we want with out persecutions. The laws of the first amendment of the U.S constitution permits freedom of press, this allows the media to not be censored by the government. With that being said, the government doesn't have the right to control things published by the press. The media is influenced by TV, radio, Internet, and newspapers; without the first amendment the privileges to criticize the government, speaking your ideas and/or the freedom to petition are challenged.…

It has been taught in school that the United States’ government is comprised of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. While teachers have endlessly emphasized the power of America’s presidents, senators, and judges, they have failed to inform their students of one of the most powerful forces today—the media. It is often forgotten that the media does not just provide its viewers with information, but shapes their way of thinking. It has become one of the strongest players in the political realm and is even being called the “fourth branch of government”. However, many are unaware of how and why the media has earned itself this name.…

When a person has no choice but to trust what they hear, news becomes a dangerous topic, or more accurately transforms from sure fact to discrete fabrications. Once people become complacent, there is no one to question whether the information people are being fed is truthful at all. It remains true to this day that “Because media is such a large part of people’s lives today...if...information is not being given in full or truthfully, then the society is left uneducated” (“Censorship Effects on Society” 1). In countries where only one source of information is available to the public, it is almost routine that the information is biased and filled with political propaganda. In reducing the amount of sources, the people have no other opinions presented to them than the ones that the government wants them to have.…

People do not want to question what the news channels are reporting. After a long day of being at work or school, people just want to sit on the couch, turn on the news and be told what to believe. Viewers believe that what we are being told is the truth. Fox News is one of the most controversial American television stations mainly because of one word, bias. They have been accused on several occasions of favoring the political right and misrepresenting facts/arguments. However, it seems to have gotten to the point where people just assume Fox News is overly biased based on what others say. There are a lot of people who have never even seen a decent amount of Fox News just because they assume that it’s garbage. In today’s society it seems as if the media is starting to take control of people’s ability to think for themselves. There have been multiple cases in which many news broadcasting stations have lied to their viewers in order to spread fear and confuse, when in reality nothing serious had happened. In today’s world there seems to be three reasons in which the media is causing harm in today’s growing society. One particular reason in which the media is causing harm is what many people like to call media bias, which is the practice of how many news journalist decide in which stories to cover and how they want to cover it. After knowing how media bias works, it leads to the second reason in which does the media report fairly and how the news lies…
