Media Censorship in the United States
Censorship has existed for longer than we could ever imagine. One of the first acts of state sponsored censorship occurred in 399 B.C. when Socrates, was executed for the “supposed common good of the people” (Guarding Public Morality, 2010, p.1). Socrates was a teacher and a philosopher in ancient Greece. His teaching methods were controversial for the time, and he was charged with corrupting the youth and drawing them away from the Greek religion. As a result of his actions, Socrates was sentenced to death by drinking a poisonous liquid containing hemlock (Guarding Public Morality, 2010, p. 1).

Media censorship in the United States has always been, and continues to be, a hotly debated topic because people both for and against censorship make rational cases for their respective side. As with any hotly debated topic, there are two sides who, at either extreme, feel an almost religious sense of responsibility to fight for, or against, censorship. Those for the censorship of television look at how children appear to be affected by the violence and vulgarity that appears on today’s television shows (Monohar, p.1). There have been many studies that have been done to see how children are affected by the media that they are exposed to on a regular basis. One study done by Robert Liebert and Robert Baron concluded that watching a violent television show makes children more willing act out as aggressors (Television and Media, 2011, p.2). These children are even more likely to become violent if they watch violent acts on television in which the villain is rewarded instead of punished. Watching violent acts getting rewarded makes children think that they can act the way that the characters do without getting into trouble or suffering any consequences (Television and Media, 2011, p.2). A 10 year study competed by Mark Lefkowitz , also found that watching violent television can lead to aggressive behavior. The study concluded that the television habits an 8 year old acquires would influence him to have aggressive
