“Project Censored educates students and the public about the importance of a truly free press for democratic self-government. We expose and oppose news censorship and we promote independent investigative journalism, media literacy, and critical thinking.” Project censored is a way to find out information that is either not being reported enough, or unfortunately, not being reported at all. Modern media censorship is what we are exposed to when we watch any kind of popular corporate news channel. I always trusted the news to tell me what is going on in the world, because I thought that is literally what they are supposed to do. Growing up, I never realized how biased a lot of media outlets are, and I would happily eat whatever information they gave me, and would even argue with whoever had differing opinions conflicting with whatever news station I watched. I hadn’t realized until a couple years ago just how biased some news stations were, and I started noticing that they weren’t reporting on a lot of things I felt were important, but were really only covering entertaining stories. It wasn’t until I took this class that I found out how many major stories weren’t being covered at all. We need Project Censored, because it is extremely important to know what’s going on in the world. It sucks that we even need a book like Project censored just to hear about current events, because I thought that was what the news was for, but no, the news is used mostly to further the economic, and political interests of those in power. A lot of peoples first reaction is to blame the journalists for reporting on irrelevant topics, but many journalists are silenced by their program, when they report on any kind of touchy, or controversial …show more content…
I’ve also noticed that the media never wants to say anything that might make us seem like we aren’t as free as America promises us to be. Like we have discussed in class, almost everyone who talks about censorship, think about China, but fail to realize that we too are being censored. Although there is no one really saying that you cant report on whatever you want, a lot of journalists wont will get fired, if the media doesn’t want to report on a certain issue the journalist wants to address. So basically, you’re allowed to talk about whatever you want to an extent, but there are sometimes consequences, and in some cases, you can be killed. No major business wants you to expose them. The military doesn’t want you to report on their unjustifiable killings. Journalists “accidentally” die all the
