Media Censorship And Its Influence On Teens

Approximately 50% of all 15-19 year olds are sexually active as of 2003. A 270% increase of sexual interactions has occurred during family hour in 1996 compared to 1976. Teen sexual interactions has been an issue for many years and isn't breaking news. Since 1991, the United States pregnancy rate has decreased by about 250%, but that doesn't mean that the problem is solved. In a study of 75 adolescent girls, one-half of whom were pregnant, said that the pregnant teens watched more soap operas before becoming pregnant and thought less of using birth control because the characters wouldn't seem likely to use it. On tv, sex is a casual act and doesn't seem special to the characters either. Data from the United States National Surveys of Children revealed that boys who watch tv programs with a higher sexual activity rate in them had a higher prevalence of sexual activity than boys who viewed less sexual activity filled programs. One of the biggest media concerns has to do with sexual imagery/situations that they are vulnerable to. In the past, movies and television were highly censored from sexual activity, but over the years, the censorship has become more and more lenient to the point where sexual content is easily available to anyone. Teens are putting themselves at risk of receiving sexual diseases by having sex, which can lead to becoming more and more unhealthy and to the point where they have a chance of dying or ruining (?) their lives by having a child while they're still in school. Being a parent while in school can affect your life for the worse. You will have to put your child first and that can definitely affect your grades which can affect what job you have.
