The 1893 Chicago World's Fair was one that the rest of the world thought would fail, but America knew it would be the greatest of all time. No one really thought Chicago could outdo Paris and the Eiffel Tower; all the odds were against America hosting the World's Fair. Allowing America did not know where the 1893 World's Fair was going to be, Chicago, St. Louis, Washington, and New York all put bids in to have the fair in their city. In February 1890 it was announced that Chicago would be the host of the World's Fair. Chicago was still developing socially and economically after the great fire in 1871, just 22 years earlier.…

It doesn’t help to be oversensitive, but sometimes it’s hard to avoid it. “Literary intellectuals love to sneer at polls and surveys,” writes Dominic Sandbrook in his determinedly informative and frequently entertaining attempt to analyse what makes British culture tick, “but historians cannot afford to do so.” The survey being putatively sneered at reveals the immense popularity of The Lord of the Rings; presumably the implications of that popularity, rather than the fact of it, which must surely be beyond contention. But it’s one of those defensive statements that makes you feel immediately defensive, not to mention confused: “Am I ‘literary’?” you think.…

In collaboration these three separate events and festivals all together as they developed separately have now developed in to the big festival itself Festival Acadiens et Créole (“Festival Acadiens”). These events allowed for the festival to grow into something that celebrates all the aspects of the Cajun Créole culture. Rather than it just being a smaller event broken up into a day things it came together to a five-day event. More non-local people are more likely to come in for a festival that is more than just a couple hours one day because they are able to turn it into a vacation. Through the use of imagery, Michael McFee illustrates the man’s dour outlook on the process of aging.…
