Various forms of media have seeped into our society and our minds for generations. Our very beings are shaped by the constant influx of information we hear from our surroundings: the news, comedy shows, radio talk shows, etc… As Americans we are enveloped in 24-7 TV availability, and we are never far from another's public statement of their opinion. The 1st Amendment allows for the freedom of speech, which many take for granted. Due to the amendment people are able to speak their opinions allowing for the development of their own personal beliefs. However the importance of others opinions and their supposed effect on the development of democratic ideas is questionable, leaving no true answer, due to the constant transfer of new information.

Unbiased news stations provide daily information about current events, and history shows our past however horrible and twisted. With this information we are able to form our own opinions, through the opinions of others. The media is crucial to us because it allows us to fight against oppression and to bring awareness to important issues. Everything from using Facebook/Twitter to fight against government injustice to the “Ice Bucket Challange” to focus attention on ASL. In the hands of many, the media can be powerful and persuasive. Countries with strict control over the media, such as North Korea, are incapable of allowing any form of democratic values to form as any variation of opinion is crushed and subsequently lost. With the sheer freedom in the media in America, we have the power to control our society, it allows us to shape it into something better, something in our image. This power helps to stimulate democratic processes as we come together to share opinions and to spread our beliefs to
