Medea Heroism Analysis

Jason’s association with Medea undermines his heroism. She helped him with every task set before him. She killed Glauce and Creon thus ruining his chances of getting a kingdom and finally killed his two sons, the heirs to his legacy. A main aspect of heroism is to go on a quest and complete it. While every other hero had a maiden’s help with Jason it felt like Medea did all the work and he was the front of the operation. Not only that but Jason seems to despair whenever laid with an impossible task, something other heroes seem to pride themselves to being able to accomplish and Medea had to be there to morally support him to do it. Even after disparity hit again because he was going to go home empty handed she not only helped him steal the Golden Fleece but also escape safely. At Corinth Jason still longed for a kingdom, a reward for true heroes and he saw his opportunity in marrying the king’s daughter Glauce who was also in love with him. That was Medea killing her own two sons by Jason with traumatizing detail. Jason had nothing to show for his accomplishments, his name had no weight to it. He had lost two kingdoms now and no beautiful wife, all he had left were his two sons to carry on his legacy and medea took that away from him. She knew how to hurt him and she did it, feeling like he got what he deserved she fled to Athens, leaving behind her a broken man, a hero with nothing to show for it. Heroism in myth is defined by a lot of motifs, but what shines above the rest is legacy. Leaving a name behind for generations to speak of and young men to look up to.
