Meconium Aspiration Syndrome: A Case Study

Meconium Aspiration Syndrome can lead to many complications to the newborn. It occurs when the fetus inhales meconium in the utero or during birth. Post term pregnancy, and macrosomia are the most common cause of intrauterine stress, causing the passage of meconium. The assessments to look for are meconium staining, respiratory distress, barrel- shaped chest, and rales and rhonchi heard on auscultation. The two QSEN’s competencies that will help future nurses develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to care for the mother and newborn with MAS are safety, and teamwork and collaboration. The first nursing diagnosis for the newborn with MAS is an impaired gas exchange related to meconium aspiration as evidenced by meconium- stained amniotic fluid, skin, nails, umbilical cord, respiratory distress, barrel- shaped chest, rales and rhonchi heard on auscultation. I learned from writing this paper that fetus can also pass their first stools inside the utero. It was interesting to research and compare five articles, reviewing five different interventions. Through this research, I was able to use my critical thinking skills to determine which intervention have better clinical outcome. For what I would have done better, I should have started this paper earlier to have more time writing it. It was a challenge to start on this paper because of my preparation for the NCLEX examination. I think that my paper went well because of my curiosity. I am always interested in learning new information, gaining more knowledge. I enjoyed researching different articles for this paper. I know that the knowledge gained about my topic will help me with my upcoming obstetrics clinical rotation, and the lessons learned from writing this paper will stay with me throughout my nursing
