Mechanistic or Organic Design An organization can house either a mechanistic or organic management design. According to Daft’s organizational theory, a mechanistic system is centralized, most decisions and knowledge are contained at the top, tasks are “rigidly defined”, and the organization is guided by many rules. On the other hand, an organic design is decentralized and “looser, free-flowing, and adaptive” (Daft, 2016, pp. 139-140). Industries common to mechanistic and organic design are manufacturing and service, respectively. At COC, Daft’s statements on organic design “rules and regulations often were not written down or, if written down, were ignored” and “people had to find their own way through the system to figure out what to do” fit in perfectly (Daft, 2016, p. 153). Even though the company possesses employee handbooks containing rules and procedures to follow or a schedule template for appointments, they are ignored more often than not. Insurance companies might revise the coverage or deductible causing an office providing healthcare to alter their procedures. If the economic condition sector contains a weak economy, with a high unemployment rate, patients are not able to afford copays for the service and as a result put off getting medical care.
Organization Uncertainty: When areas out of an organization’s control affect them it can lead to a level of uncertainty. The Oxford American Dictionary (1980) defines uncertainty as “not to be depended on” or “changeable” (p. 1003). Since the main orthopaedic doctor plans on retiring, the level of uncertainty is high for employees and patients.
