Mechanical And Chemical Weathering In The United States

Improved Essays
Weathering is the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on earth’s surface. Natural substances like water, ice, acids, salt, plants animals, and changes in temperature are all different targets for weathering. After the material is broken down or dissolved, erosion occurs. Erosion transports the bits and pieces of material away. Every rock on earth’s surface will be weathered in some way because they are not tough enough to resist weathering. The two types of weathering is mechanical weathering and chemical weathering. Most of the time these processes work together to shape the world. Weathering smoothes rough, sharp areas on different rocks and overtime wears away exposed surfaces. Mechanical weathering, or physical weathering, …show more content…
A substance has been oxidized when oxygen reacts and caused a chemical reaction. Rust is caused by oxidation. Rocks that contain iron can produce rust through oxidation. Rust is very easy to be broken. If rust is found on a rock, it can be easily chipped or broken off. After chemical weathering has occurred, a complete new substance is created by the original substance.
In Arizona, weathering and erosion created the Grand Canyon, a massive canyon that is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and about one mile wide.
More than 110 natural limestone caves are found at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico. The largest limestone cave there is called Big Room. It is about 4,000 feet long, and 625 feet wide. Big Room is about equivalent to six football fields. This natural cave was created by carbonization.
Human activities can speed up the process of weathering. Burning fossil fuels release chemicals that change to acid when combining with sunlight and moisture. This created acid rain which could lead to breaking down of buildings and monuments. In China, the Leshan Giant Buddha at Mount Emei is the world’s largest Buddha statue. It was carved 1,300 years ago and has remained unharmed. However, in recent years, acid rain has affected its color and caused small pieces to chip

Igneous rock forms when there is an “intrusion” of igneous rock into the preexisting rock formed by sediment. The types of bedrock observed in Barrington are granite, quartz monazite, and granodiorite. There was evidence of chemical weathering such as oxidation, or the accumulation of rust on rocks when iron within the rocks reacts with oxygen, as evident in figure 10.…

Why does the investigation of the cave require a multi-disciplinary or inter-disciplinary approach? Named after its discoverer, the cave complex consists of a string of chambers that are 570 meters long and a connecting gallery and three vestibules. The largest chamber is 70 meters long and 40 meters wide. The distance between the entrance and the furthest images are about 250 meters. At the northern end the cave forks into two horn-shaped branches.…

“Later, as overlying rocks were eroded away, the intrusive granite was revealed at the surface and eventually uplifted” (How Half Dome Formed). After being eroded for some time, large amounts of pressure were released from the rounded crown of the Half Dome. This absence of pressure lead to a type of weathering called exfoliation, and whole sheets of rock were peeling off at a time. This process “is mostly responsible for the peaks contour today” (How Half Dome Formed,…

On Saturday, November the 21st, I visited the Gypsum mine with my lab group: Luke Petro, Liz Morehead, and Kylie Hoef, along with several other groups. After procuring the necessary tools from the geology lab like a meter stick, rock hammer, flashlight, bottle of acid, and helmet, we set off to the mine. Located roughly 100 feet below the surface near Grand Rapids, the mine is now a storage facility owned by Michigan Natural Storage. In the mine, we measured the various rock columns to find how large the different sections of gypsum, shale and dolomite were. In addition to measuring the rock types, we took samples using the hammer.…

The Grand Canyon, as it exists today, is an enormous, 277 mile-long trench carved through the landscape of Arizona by the Colorado River. It reached depths of up to 1 mile, and is as wide as 15 miles in some places. The Grand Canyon was created through the geographical changes brought about by the Laramide Orogeny, a seismic event that occurred approximately 70 million years ago and caused the formation of the Rocky Mountains. Later, around 18 million years ago, the Basin and Range Province was created and began the flow of water through the modern-day Grand Canyon area. Finally, around 6 million years ago, the Gulf of California opened up and sent a large river flowing through the area, which joined with the drainage coming from the Basin…

Dictionary.com defines erosion as, “the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves, etc.” 80 million years ago, the North American Plate slid under the Pacific Plate when they collided at North America’s west coast. The Rocky Mountains formed as a result of this collision, and it also caused the uplift of the Colorado Plateau. The Colorado River flowing over the rising Plateau created something of a “buzz saw,” or a deep groove in the surface of the plateau.…
