Measuring Time In High School

As I stand before you tonight, I would like to recognize the many people that the Class of 2017 is grateful to have here with you all for your final high school gathering. It has been a long four years, but here you are, ready to graduate. You have worked hard to get to this point, but you could never have done it alone. You owe an enormous thank you to your parents and families, for their unconditional love and support; to the faculty and staff, the ones who educated and pushed you; and also to the community that has provided the perfect backdrop for you to grow and thrive. Because of these things, you are the people who made the biggest impact on their lives.
So, how do you measure the time you have spent in high school? In the beginning, you measured it in years, the next four looming ahead of you and seeming endlessly long. As the days and weeks passed, you measured it in semesters, growing from puzzled freshman to sophisticated sophomores. Junior and Senior year rolled around, you began to measure the remaining time in months, weeks, and all too soon, mere days.

As you look back, the last thirteen years should become a happy blur of sleepovers, Homecoming games, band concerts, and homework…lots of homework. But if one day the high school memories begin to fade, just know that you only need to look back at the pictures to remember that the time will never be remembered by the time you spent in class, the semesters, or even the four years, but in the friendships and memories that you made along the way. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely and formally thank you for all you have done and made possible in helping me progress throughout my time here at SPC. My experience as a member of the Honors College has enhanced my life through the fellowship, better course environments, and the exceptional research conference opportunities and exposure that your leadership has provided. From a student’s standpoint ― especially an “unconventional” student such as myself ― you have given not only fresh and unique opportunities to myself and our membership, but you have given your heart and soul with the purpose of adding an advanced and totally positive learning environment. I know many Honors College alumni privately express this very same message to you ― but your total giving of time, energy, creativity, and true caring should receive far more formal acknowledgement.…

Although we grow apart and go our separate ways, we will never forget the moments of celebration and traditions, the reflection of who we once were, and who we are inspired to become. The celebration of graduating is such a great accomplishment, we have completed thirteen years of nightly homework, reading, practices, and jobs. Although it was all worth it and what we carry with us when we are out of East High is a treasure that no one could ever forget. The celebration of studying every night trying to earn that college credit, but wondering if it is genuinely even worth it, knowing exactly what I want to do in my future, and leaving with never failing a class has been all such a valuable accomplishment.…

Some people say that the four short years of high school are the best years of their life. For me, that wasn’t the case. Maybe I didn’t do it right, or maybe I was focused on the wrong things, but let’s just say I’ve been counting the days until graduation from my freshman year. Although high school wasn’t the best years of my life, if I could give my former self some advice, maybe I could have changed that. In order to better myself in the long run, I would tell my former self that I need to step out of my comfort zone, be myself, and relieve some of the stress that I was feeling.…

Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…

Graduation was a time to celebrate my achievements, to celebrate growing up and maturing into adulthood, to celebrate my friends and family that guided me along the way, and most importantly to celebrate one chapter coming to an end, and another one just beginning. The night before graduation I could hardly sleep as I knew that my high school career would soon be over. I got up that next morning, took a shower, put my makeup on, straightened my hair, and put my favorite black dress on, only this time I had my chords, cap, and gown to go with it.…
