Measuring Humanity's Dyson Discourse

Improved Essays
One way to measure a civilization’s technological capability is to assess its ability to collect, store, and utilize energy. Since the first industrial revolution, a process spurred forward by the ability to harness coal as an energy resource, humanity has undergone massive technological advances that have transformed nearly every aspect of human life. The continued advancement of human society is reliant upon the ability to harness more and more energy, but at some point our energy demand will outstrip the energy resources available on Earth.

Once we’ve maxed out the energy available here on Earth, where will humanity turn to find more energy? One potential answer is that humanity could construct a Dyson Sphere, a hypothetical megastructure

1.0 Introduction Richard J. Muller is an accomplished professor at the University of California at Berkeley with expertise in a variety of areas including: energy efficiency, conservation, solar power, and nuclear power. His book “Energy for Future Presidents” is an open monologue where Muller expresses his thoughts on the current state of energy sources and its potential in a growing world where the demand for energy is continually escalating. The need for this book stems from a lack of in-depth knowledge about energy sources and the issues surrounding it. This publication focuses around exploring alternatives for energy security in the United States, while also keeping in mind the effects that these energy sources have on global warming. One of the greatest strengths encompassed within the reading pertains to the author’s ability to be non-subjective in his writing and that the author offers a different perspective on energy; separate from the way the world understands it.…

Nevertheless, despite all of our grand achievements and the relationships that have come as result of it, some would argue that we are still failing to produce smarter in regards to efficiency. A lot of our inventions and alterations are no longer for necessity. With the increase of inventions there has been a push for cleaner and more efficient electricity sources. Since the early 1970’s there has been a growing push for people to become more aware of the world around us and preserving what we have.…

Clean coal is a technology of greatly disputed value with some believing it is the way of the future while others believe it merely applies a band-aid to a gunshot wound. Clean coal technology is not the most economically or environmentally practical method of energy production causing me to advocate for the increased use of alternative technologies. Any technology that reduces the environmental impact of burning coal falls under the clean coal technologies umbrella (Halber, 2008, para. 1). The two most common categories of these technologies deal with the removal and storage, most commonly in subterrestrial caverns, of carbon dioxide before or after the burning of coal or the removal of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, the cause of acid…

INTRODUCTION Energy sources are a vast number but not all of them are renewable and those that are non-renewable are not going to cater for the next generations if we do not change to live conservatively and sustainable . The non-renewable energy sources not only are damaging our environment, they are also depleting . This means that the future generations will not get the benefits we are getting today from our environment if we are not starting to change our values and attitudes towards the use of the energy sources. Sources of energy More concentrated energy sources are used and are categorized into renewable and non-renewable energy. Renewable energy sources are those sources that can be replenished over and over again, that is they do…
