My views on friendship vary every time I reflect on that area of my life. In high school, I used to think that a friend was just someone to talk to and hang out with. I feel like that is most likely the biggest change that I have made in my life, actually guarding myself and not just letting people in. After going through phase after phase of letting anyone in and giving them chance after chance I decided that change was no longer optional. Friendship like any other relationship means setting boundaries and slowly letting people in and deciding how much that person really needs to know about your life.
When I read through “Meaningful Relationships: A Personal View,” from Corey and Corey I realize that the qualities listed are those that I believe to be qualities that truly make a relationship on many levels. The three top qualities that I firmly believe to be the most influential in my life are: Each person in the relationship has a separate identity, each person assumes responsibility for his or her own level of happiness, and each person is able to give and receive honest and respectful feedback.
“Each person in the relationship has a separate identity,” this quality has become important in my life because I have ultimately struggled with Erik Erikson's intimacy versus isolation.
