Throughout life, everyone has moments where they become more self-aware as they continue to learn more about themselves as time passes by. When I was younger, I don’t believe that I truly knew myself. I believe that I knew some aspects about myself, but not who I am entirely as a person. The experiences that I’ve faced throughout my lifetime are what have allowed me to grow as an individual and to figure out who I am. I had always thought about choosing the career path of becoming a veterinarian, but didn’t believe I had what it takes to be one. I was able to get through a lot of stuff that I didn’t think was possible for me to before. I was fine watching the surgeries and watching the injections,” I said.
“Seriously? I honestly thought you wouldn’t be able to do it. That’s great,” my dad commented.
“Yeah, I didn’t think I could either. I guess we’re always learning more about ourselves as time goes by,” I replied. “Also, I’m very shocked. I went in thinking I’d be sad the entire time because of how much I love animals. I thought seeing them in pain would make me devistated. I feel as though I was able to disconnected my feelings while I was in the veterinary hospital, something I never thought I could do to this extent,” I said.
“I’m proud of you,” my father said. I was proud of myself too.
Self-awareness lead to a meaningful change when I spent my work experience placement at the veterinary hospital.Through the experience, I learned that becoming a veterinarian is a possibility for me and that I can do it. I was always hesitant if I’d be able to put my feelings aside and get the job done and I realized that I can. Also, I was able to be more tough than I expected I could be during the placement as I was in sad situations at some points during my two weeks there.
