In order to establish and maintain collaboration during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, Cheryl and Ken receive the IEP ahead of time for review and suggestions on what goals to add, change, or delete for Jake. This allows Cheryl and Ken to feel active and involved in their son’s education. The school also allows Jake’s in-home therapist to attend these meetings as well so that all professionals can be involved and working as a unified front to provide the best possible care and opportunities for Jacob. This also allows the IEP goals to be implemented in the home setting, not just at school, especially the goals related to occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. Educators play a large role in supporting children with disabilities. Ken specified that the most effective thing an educator can do to support his son is to listen. He said that educators need to listen to the parents and implement strategies and processes that the parents desire for their child.
