Meaning Of The Song The Tragically Hip

The song ‘Ahead by a Century’ by the band The Tragically Hip is said to be about reflecting on the past; going over memories. On the contrary though, the meaning and the theme of a song are completely different, leaving one question; what is the theme?

Firstly, I strongly believe the song is about someone unconsciously stuck on their past mistakes, leading them to regret and a deep depression. To support the theory let’s start with the beginning of the song, where the individual seems to be reminiscing.
“First thing we'd climb a tree and maybe then we'd talk
Or sit silently and listen to our thoughts
With illusions of someday casting a golden light
No dress rehearsal, this is our life
And that's where the hornet stung me
And I had a feverish dream
With revenge and doubt

It moves on to tell us that “that’s where the hornet stung me”, symbolizing their awakening. When they awoke from their dream it hints at the fact they woke up to a feverish dream, perhaps a daze; living each day in a cloud of doubt. The words themselves tell a story of a man stuck on his past mistakes, bringing up a range of emotions including revenge and doubt. “Tonight we smoke them out” refers to the first line about the hornet. Since the hornet symbolizes his awakening, he’s smoking out his reality. Perhaps using drugs, or some other form of substance abuse to fog his
