in artistic execution. Tattoos may not always be so forward about their meaning or what it is they symbolize, but sure enough a meaning is always there. For example, a simple yellow bell on my mother’s right ankle, and to most that is all it is a simple yellow bell, but for her it’s a symbol of a childhood nickname that her mother used to call her. My mother got her tattoo to express her fondness over the name she was once called, whereas; my tattoo, a dreamcatcher that also a compass, symbolizes to follow your dreams wherever they may lead you because it is sure to be an adventure. The location of my tattoo was not by accident, nor was it chosen because such a large tattoo needed space to be drawn my tattoo was placed upon my spine in between my shoulder blades because it will be the basis for when I receive my next tattoo which is a pair of large angel wings. The angel wings are significant because I believe I have a guardian angel looking out for me that encourages me to follow my dreams; both tattoos linking together to symbolize one meaning. It is an expensive procedure to go and have a tattoo removed, covered up, tattooed over, or redone, so whenever people do get tattoos it is usually a well thought out design that they have thought long and hard about. One does not simply just walk into a tattoo shop and get a tattoo they walk into a tattoo with a predetermined design and location. When getting my tattoo done I walked into the tattoo shop, talked to the guy, told him what I wanted, and showed him a picture of my concept design he then took the concept design went to his desk redrew it and said he would do it right now for two hundred dollars. To most it would seem as if I hadn’t gotten my tattoo on a whim because I had not planned on getting a tattoo on that particular day, but even though I hadn’t planned on getting my tattoo that day I still had a general idea of what I wanted, where I wanted it, and how big it was going to be. That is how most “impulsive” tattoos are acquired, people walk in with a preconceived notion of what they want and they get it, and even though they weren’t planning on getting it they just said forget it and go it anyway.
