The topic of murder has many forms of discussion, a majority of which that invite intrigue while simultaneously instilling fear. Murder implores humanity to question if either we are capable of such an act, and more importantly are those closest to ourselves able. In this case study, we will discuss the meaning and morality of cold-blooded murder in relation to a 1950s case that began with the brutal slaughter of nearly an entire family. Furthermore, explain why does man kill man; if we pride ourselves on our ability to be rational and think critically, what causes man to lose principle?

However, what the surviving Clutter family members never imagined would be the popularity of the novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. Based on the events, of that evening categorized as a nonfiction novel author Capote shines a light on the life, and death of the Clutter family whilst simultaneously, shifting the focus from the victims towards the perpetrators. An act, which invites readers to question why exactly did they kill the Clutter family, what caused these men to shift so far from the natural societal order and is this case just the beginning? Atypical in nature the Clutter family murder took the world by storm on account of its brutality that was often not associated with home robberies during this time. No matter the official profession they had before their time in prison they’ve now assumed the role of ex criminals. However, in assuming these roles they renounced their roles within society and willing chose to partake in crime. As a result, their morals also suffered and what was right by society standards took a backseat once put against the moral code of a career criminal. Therefore, justifying their actions in the eyes of their fellow inmates whom at some point have also proven their dedication to their craft no matter the consequences.
