Mead Halls originated from Germany by the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes when they migrated to England. Being the king's’ parties, the mead halls were only open to certain people such as nobles and knights, also known as thanes. Mead Halls were important for the Anglo-Saxons, because it was a place of epic telling and bonding between the king and his court.
During the Middle Ages, the king and his court would come together in what is called a mead-hall. “A mead-hall is a large dining hall where warriors and others would participate in drinking and eating and the telling of stories”(Rocket). “In Beowulf, Herot is illustrated as a grand hall built by the King Hrothgar for his village. Everyone drinks and socializes in Herot as part of a daily ritual”(Phirta, Kundu). The King and his subjects would gather at night, share a drink, and fraternize about everything. “Hrothgar, king of Danes, has built a wonderful mead hall called where his subjects congregate and make merry”( Beowulf 42). It was obvious that the king was grateful for his court and wanted to share some time with them while enjoying life as much as they all could. In Beowulf, King Hrothgar was very troubled by the fact that Grendel was attacking the mead halls because it ruined the spirit of celebration and created fear. The king could not tolerate this chaos anymore, which is the reason he was relieved when Beowulf saved the kingdom. The mead halls started again once the monster was killed. Joy and celebration came back to Herot, and the king and his court were safe. The mead halls were a place of bonding between the king and his court, and where celebration was always existent. A mead hall is a building, hall where the king and his thanes would gather to celebrate.
