Dissociative Identity Disorder is a rare psychological disorder in which a person has two or more personalities. Each character has its own thoughts and feelings. Ussually, the two or more personalities often are very distinct and opposite to each other. It has been proven that the transitions from one personality to another occur when the person is in a distressful situation or has flash back memories. Even though people with DID are unaware of the transitions and the events that happen while in the parallel personality, they notice a time gap in there lives while experiencing another personality. Amnesia in DID is seen by gaps in the patient's memory for periods of their past. Most DID patients have amnesia for periods when another personality is gone. Some even find items in their house that they never remember purchasing, finding notes written in different handwriting, or other evidence of weird phenominon. Pataients with DID also have a symptom called despersonalization. Depersonalization is a dissociative symptom in which the patient feels that their body is not real. Some DID patients experience depersonalization as a feeling of being outside of their body. They feel out of place, and some doctors think this is when they are switching personalities. and soon after experience amnesia. Another symptom of DID is derealization, which is almost like a hallucination. Patients may see walls or other objects as changing in shape or color. Persons suffering from DID usually have a main personality that psychiatrists refer to as a host personality and is ussually the one intact during the a post traumatic situation. Tihs is the personality that is often looking for help. Since they lose awareness for hours at a time they often meet people who know them by another name. Treatment For this disorder takes a long time to somewhat recover. there are many methods of treatment like, Psychotherapy, medication, hypnosis, and prognosis.
