Each and every individual has an adaptable standpoint to where they see themselves placed as to how prepared or how comfortable they are with college level reading and writing. It’s quite difficult to determine exactly the specific expectations but, there is a general perception as to what should be expected. Reflecting on my background and experiences of reading and writing defines my level of preparedness and comfort for college. These habits of mind experiences can help me develop necessary skills used for my reading and writing skills such as rhetorical knowledge, or the ability to analyze understandings of audiences, purposes and context in text, the development of better writing processes and more effective usage of conventions and grammar. Out of all the habits of mind, the top habits I believe describe my reading and writing skills are curiosity, openness and creativity. I desire to grasp more knowledge from the world and all events that take place, I am desperate to seek new information to absorb more detail and understanding about new topics that strike an interest. I always take a risk to write about something unordinary in essays I write and I conduct superior research on the topic and seek all relevant information and communicate it into my writing. Openness is somewhat interconnected with curiosity as it means to discover new and modern ways of thinking in the world. Taking different perspectives of topics is a significance of grasping new information about how the world operates, by examining and finding connections and relating them to my personal life, practicing the process of writing an essay, such as gathering, investigating, developing, presenting and reflecting and listening to write a successful essay. Creativity has a relation with openness, your

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

In chapter one of “From Inquiry to Academic Writing”, Stuart Greene and April Lidinsky explain that academic writing is how scholars communicate with each other in their fields of study, and that you have to learn to think, read, do research, and write like an academic, but it won’t be easy. The skills needed for academic writing are not only valued in school, but outside of school as well. Academic writing involves making an argument by attempting to change people’s minds and behaviors and supporting that argument with good reasons, you don’t want to “shout down” your opponent. There are four habits of mind that are outlined in this chapter, which are very analytical. Analysis involves breaking something down into different parts and seeing…

Writing, is that word that in my experiences as a current student is just not the word you’d like to hear throughout your school day, because it is the thought of having to write for an assignment or project that you would not like to do. But, for some, writing is a big joy to them and expressing their emotional thoughts no matter the task of which they are writing for. I feel that to be a good writer you must be able to put you in the writing and be able to express everything you’d like to express with whatever the amount of words you have at your disposal. Just like most people, I didn’t get into the notion of writing until around second or third grade when you had to write a page or a couple of paragraphs as bellwork. The thing about this bellwork is that it wasn’t say an assignment, but more so a way to express our current thoughts on just about whatever we wanted to write.…

There are also many different ways that you can be stronger as a writer, but what is the point of doing something if you are not enjoying it. Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

Describe Yourself As A Writer I’ve come to realize that after years of writing papers, I’m actually a better writer than I give myself credit for. I’ve noticed over time that I’ve advanced in how I structure my paragraphs, however, not so much with my sentences. It’s like making a cake look delicious at first glance with frosting and decorations, but then you take a bite and there 's way too much sugar or it 's overcooked in the inside. My strength in writing includes: using better words to describe what I’m writing about, spelling complex words, creativity, and passion.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…
