Paradox Of Probation

One of the scholarly articles I have chosen for my paper is, The Paradox of Probation: Community Supervision in the Age of Mass Incarceration. This article is from 2013, which was very recent. This article talks about how probation, in the era of mass incarceration, providing the first comprehensive evaluation of the role of a probation officer in the criminal justice system. Probation is very serious consequence, and I don’t think people really understand the way it works. “This article contributes to this emerging literature by focusing on probation, a vital component in many states’ visions of reform. In the next section, I outline the two perspectives on probation—one of reform advocates and another from a line of critical criminology—and …show more content…
I think being different with certain clients are a good thing. You want to make sure that it is clear to your client that if they don’t follow the rules of being on probation, it can easily be a violation or you can get sent to jail. I am not sure how I would be with other clients besides my mentally ill ones. I can say that for sex offenders, I would know to be very strict with them and the same as the DV offenders (domestic violence). If I had my own caseload, and I was the officer for sex offenders or DV clients, I definitely know that my mind would differ and maybe, I would at different. I say act different because with some of my clients, I sometimes feel sorry for them, but I know if I had DV or sex offenders, I wouldn 't. I wouldn’t because it was very wrong to beat the crap out of someone, and it is extremely wrong to sexually molest …show more content…
I learned that being an intern at Dutchess County Probation, the three main components apply to the job. The first component is a goal or setting a goal. Being a PO intern and interviewing the clients, I have realized that they need to set goals. If they don’t set goals, where do they start? They will have nothing to look forward too. By letting my clients set goals, it gives them a positive attitude, and helps them get past the tough times. For example, I was giving one of my clients a CSR (case-supervision review). This is something that is done every six months. We talk to our clients about a three short term goals, three long term goals, and their action steps which allow them to achieve those goals. For some clients they actually follow their steps, and other clients don’t. We are able to tell who is accomplishing their goals and who

Probation is a sentence that takes place within the community rather than a prison. The offender is supervised by a designated probation officer who oversees the offender and enforces any conditions placed upon them by the court. It emerged as a response to the strict uniformity of penal institutions and is a move towards the individualisation of sentencing, as punishment can be tailored to the individual needs of the offender (McLaughlin and Muncie, 2001). Probation was also a response to the overriding penal concern in the 1970’s, which lasted until the early 1990’s, of reducing the prison population, this led to the introduction of an array of alternatives to custody, with the assumption that their existence would enable the courts to use imprisonment more sparingly (Newburn, 2013).…
