Mdm Vani Case Study

Improved Essays
Mdm Vani is brought in by her daughter to get her ears checked. She is 80 years old and her daughter claims that her mother has had hearing loss for a few years now. Because she lives alone in a 3-room HDB flat, she is in need of hearing aids as she has trouble using electronic devices daily and family members complain that Mdm Vani cannot hear them whenever they call her on her cellphone. This is the audiogram of Mdm Vani’s ears after conduction of the hearing test. Hearing loss Classification (Air Conduction):
From 250-100Hz, the thresholds of Mdm Vani’s ears range from -5 up to 25dB. This indicates that her ears are functioning normally at these frequencies. However, from 2000-8000Hz, the threshold ranges drop drastically and range from 35 to 65dB in the right ear, showing a sloping mild to moderately severe hearing loss. In the left ear, it has better results, ranging from 25 to 50dB, indicating mild to moderate hearing loss, proving that the better ear is the left.

Bone Conduction testing:
Bone conduction (BC) was required for Mdm Vani because the air conduction thresholds are worse than 25dB at the frequencies of 2000, 3000 and 4000. A bone conductor is used to send sound directly to the inner ear by vibrating the bone behind the ear. It is a test of the inner ear only as it bypasses the outer and

When compared to the Articulation Index (AI) graph, Mdm Vani could understand about 78% of the words that are being said. This shows that at least Mdm Vani could not understand 22% of the words when she is communicating with her family members over the phone. The hearing loss also begins from the 1000 Hz mark in the worse ear. Mdm Vani could hear more of speech but is handicapped during noisy situations. Due to the loud noises from the TV, it could have affected her ability to hear properly as well as listen to the phone rings and words being said over the

A bilateral cochlear implant helps provide hearing in 360 degrees because your head acts as a barrier to sounds coming from different directions (Cochlear, n.d.). Thirty-six days after Auguste’s surgery, he lifted his head after audiologists Margaret Winter sent pulses of electric currents to his brain. Lifting his head showed that he heard a sound. This reaction was remarkable to the audiologists because Auguste was only 22 months old.…

Instrumentation used for monitoring includes a sound level meter and a dosimeter. The sound level measures the intensity of sound at a particular moment while a dosimeter measures the intensity of sound over a period of time. If the monitoring program indicates exposure to sound levels at or over the 8-hour average of 85 dB, the employer is required to notify the effected employee so preventative measures can be implemented to reduce the risk of permanent hearing loss. These preventative measures will include providing the necessary PPE, providing free audiometric testing, the involvement of engineering,…

Two Ears are Better Than One: Microtia Aural Atresia June 26, 2006, the day of my son's birth, I received some shocking news. A nurse informed me that he was born without his right ear, a birth defect called microtia aural atresia. My lack of knowledge on this birth defect made it difficult to understand that babies could be born without their ears. The nurse tried to reassure me that he could still hear because he passed a hearing test. The doctor performs the hearing test by clapping their hands loudly to see if the baby startles.…

Based on this diagnosis, a treatment plan has been established in order to assist J.A. with her speech. The focus of therapy would be to increase her intelligibility and focus primarily on limiting the frequency of phonological processes and increasing the functionally of her speech. The Cycles approach will be implemented to provide systematic correction of several phonemes simultaneously. This approach will also positively affect J.A. intelligibility more quickly given the multiple errors that she produces. The Cycles approach incorporates perceptual training through auditory bombardment, coloring activities and verbal production.…

As I understand MS is a neurologic degenerative disorder. It is not too common to have hearing loss, but in the cases that it occurs, they come as described in the question. Sudden hearing loss with ringing in the ears, that can resolve by itself as the audiometry shows. In this case, it shows a positive resolution in the sudden hearing loss part with good speech recognition in noise, but the patient still complains he is not hearing well and is using a hearing aid on the left ear with benefit. On the other hand, electrophysiologic tests show a very poor improvement on the left ear and some change on the right ear configuration.…

In the PHAB, there are 66 items which are separated into 4 scales and three of them are further classified into 2 subscales, as revealed in Table 2, for recognizing the communication abilities and the sound perception in daily life. The participants need to respond how often they have experienced in each item from given 7 points scale (see Table 3) with hearing aids and without hearing aids. For developing the APHAB, the 24 items were selected from the 66 items in the PHAB for reducing the time of testing and also those items were allocated in 4 subscales, including ease of communication (EC), reverberation (RV), background noise (BN) and aversiveness (AV) ( Cox &Alexander,…
