Given a McNamara Scholarship would not only enhance my time at Virginia Tech but improve the people around me as well. As the son of 1st generation immigrants to the United States, we have faced some economic issues throughout my life. These economic problems did not only change my life by limiting the activities I was involved but it also help build the person who I am today. However, even with some finical restrictions, I continue to purse success. This success is not only in academic aspects but also community and team activities. With each passing year, educational expenses continue to escalate and a collegiate experience is well beyond the financial means for many successful high school students, including myself. During difficulties in the past, my family has maneuvered through financial crises with extraordinary faith and by remaining together. As a result, I am compelled to join my brothers at North Greenville University in efforts to eliminate additional education expenses. The Georgia Military scholarship is the helping hand that I deserve to assist me in becoming who I want to be. I was on the wrestling team in high school where I learned what hard work was. When the coach was pushing us past our limits, I wasn’t thinking, “Am I going to make it through this?” I treated it as a way for me to create a stronger version of myself. Whatever is thrown at me, at any level of difficulty, I accept it and treat it as a challenge to overcome.…

In twenty years, as a board member of a scholarship selection committee, I would award the 17-year-old me a scholarship not because I am simply answering the prompt in my favor, but because I know that the 17-year-old me's dream is to go to college to gain a higher education and has made learning a high priority since elementary school. The 17-year-old me is determined, hard-working, and understands the struggle of having little money, so I would know that the scholarship would not go to waste; she would use it so that her parents can ease their worry about how she is going to go to college, since they are not able to make any contributions. Knowing that her family earns little income, she has spent most of her high school years dedicating her time to her schoolwork, hoping that she would be qualified to earn scholarships during her senior year. During the other majority of her time, she has volunteered for over 300 hours at various locations and participating in school clubs and activities.…

The Katherine Trewhitt Scholarship would impact my life by showing me my potential and helping me avoid debt. I see a massive part of transitioning from a child to an adult is learning to be independent. From my point of view, independence is found through hard work and responsibility. This gateway into adulthood is found when a student begins applying for colleges and scholarships. Applying for scholarships takes a considerable amount of time and effort, thus making it a challenge to see if through the years a student has learned to work hard and be responsible.…

Frederick Douglass once said “It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.” This means that difficult circumstances are needed to become better versions of ourselves. As someone who overcame the difficulty of balancing academics, athletics, and involvement with clubs and organizations on campus, I personally agree with this statement. Based upon the qualities I developed during these difficult circumstances, Frederick Douglass would believe I’m deserving of a scholarship bearing his name.…

I am also willing to bet there are a fair amount of applicants who meet the unwritten standards needed to receive this scholarship. Throughout our lives as adolescents we are asked “what do we want to become?” I have contemplated what I wished to do with my life for quite a while and I was inspired by constants in my life ever since I was little. I remember always having a pet by my side to comfort me when I was unhappy and play with me when I was alone. The catalyst for my decision was whenever I lived on a busy street with cars constantly speeding through every day. One sunny day I went to the car to retrieve something from the car with my pug by my side.…
