During my sophomore year as an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, I was accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. I do not exaggerate when I say that this program changed the entire course of my life: helping me to fully understand my interests, altering my professional goals, and providing me with a viable path for my passions. As a first generation student, I had very little knowledge about how to navigate the sphere of undergraduate education and in the same vein, I knew next to nothing about graduate school. Before McNair I was never aware of what graduate school could offer me and the program, and the people it connected me with, became my greatest source of support as I made the journey into pursuing my doctorate. …show more content…
I owe my professional future to the McNair program and its research advisors and I aim to make them proud by continuing my journey into graduate education and the professoriate.
Throughout the entire McNair summer program I was challenged to do things I had never done before. When applying, I was required to create a research proposal for the project I would conduct during the summer, including hypotheses, what data would be used, and how it would be analyzed. This was my introduction to research and it took much consultation and self-reflection to determine how to handle this first step in my journey. My McNair research project went through several stages, but I settled on topics that I was passionate about: community service and criminal justice. I conducted a quantitative analysis of secondary data to determine the associations between community service programs present in South Carolina counties and

Upward Bound has equipped us with the right tools to use in college, with information of and about resources to use, dorms and financial aid, and a chance to experience college life at NC State University. All the coordinators, tutors and teachers devoted their time to every student, providing information to each parent and making this new experience to first graduates, less daunting. Being in Upward Bound has allowed me to build friendships with teachers and others from different schools, while also creating a family with the group of students that were also involved. Not only will this information be passed down to us, it will be used when we find ourselves stuck or without hope, and will be passed on to future generations. Our experience and knowledge will guide us through college with the help still remaining and of others along the way.…

Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…

It was always my goal. Ever since I went to a debate camp there over the summer, I knew I wanted to go to Stanford. The worst part of it all was that I actually, genuinely, wholeheartedly believed that I could. I believed that I was different. Although statistics might have suggested otherwise, I thought that the acceptance rates of nearly four percent didn’t apply to me, the academic prodigy from downtown Detroit.…

Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

The harder we worked the more accolades and acknowledgment we received in the program. This program made me realize that I can attend a four-year university and that it’s my duty to do so to improve myself and my family. It also exposed to people who are more like me, who shared a common goal (unlike high school). Since I have first hand experience with intellectuals working to shape my mind and helping me grow and even realize things about social acceptance and improvement, I whole heartedly agree with Lina Martin’s take on what the public individual should be working towards because if it wasn’t…

The labor force is provided by offenders and the material cost is covered by the community. In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…
