Billy has a lot of issues which cause him to be in the ward. However, a lot of his issues arose due to the extensive time he spent in the ward as well as outside influences. Nurse Ratched is friends with Billy’s mother. His mother is a very overprotective figure in Billy’s life, causing him many self-esteem issues. “Billy's psycholinguistic handicap, a manifestation of an acute failure of self-confidence, is compounded by an egocentric, overprotective mother and by Nurse Ratched, who trades on both Billy's weakness and her friendship with Mrs. Bibbit.” (Porter) McMurphy is the perfect character to help Billy with his problems. McMurphy is someone who is outgoing and very confident about himself. He does wild and unpredictable manly things, which Billy wishes he could do. McMurphy is also known to have sex with a lot of women, a lot of times. Billy’s mother scares Billy to the point where he can not even imagine doing anything against his mother's will. Yet, McMurphy is able to influence Billy to help break through his fears. McMurphy is a role model to Billy, and often does little things like “let [the patients] win, and [everyone] watching the game knows it. So do the players. But there still isn't a man raking his pile of cigarettes ... that doesn't have a smirk on his face like he's the toughest gambler on the whole
