Mcmurphy: A True Hero

Improved Essays
McMurphy clearly demonstrates characteristics of being a hero many times throughout the story. Specifically, when the orderlies insist on washing George after the fishing trip, knowing full well that he suffers from OCD, and refuses to take part. Of course, the more they pushed George around the more McMurphy became intolerant of them; calling the orderly a “coon” and a “Nigger”(pg 273) trying to start a fight. Incidentally, when all hell breaks out McMurphy is willing to get beat on to protect one of his friends. This scene alone is enough for McMurphy to be a hero.

McMurphy is a loud, rebellious character and his many efforts to fight for what is right for the patients exhibits key characteristics of those of a Christ Figure. “Nobody can tell why exactly he laughs; there’s nothing funny going on”,(page 12, Kesey).McMurphy, the moment he enters the mental institution automatically changes the attitude of the patients by bringing something odd, laughter. The patients idolize McMurphy and even more so when he performs miracle like actions, for example, when he was able to set up the fishing trip and bringing the prostitute. Kesey creates this rebellion and these battles to exemplify how the only way to overcome the power of authority, is to fight back against it. McMurphy is seen as a hero because of his rebellious way of living in the ward, which is a true testament to his sacrifice and ambition. After McMurphy is finally defeated by the nurses, and dies, Nurse Ratched tries “to get her ward back into shape, but it (is) difficult with McMurphy’s presence still tromping down the halls and laughing out loud” (Kesey, 321). Even though he eventually dies, McMurphy is not forgotten amongst the fellow patients, and amongst the nurses who are forever wounded by his bravery. Kesey creates the Christ-figure character to show that mentally ill patients are in need of a savior, and he makes allusions to hell to show the serious problem in mental wards, which he experienced first hand in his personal…

Based on the article/video, I would consider James Shaw a hero because of his courageous and brave action. He saw an opportunity to save himself and others and he took it. This makes him an opportunist. “James Shaw Jr. stopped Travis Reinking during the Sunday morning shooting at an Antioch Waffle House that left 4 people dead.” Thus this reason, he is considered to be ideal in my book.…

The staff is able to intimidate the men of the ward with potential punishments, preventing the men from confidently expressing themselves.
