After reading McMinn’s chapters on prayer and scripture in Christian counseling, I can say that there is differently a need for both. McMinn shared the pros and cons about using prayer and scripture, but survey’s seems to indicate that they can be used in some counseling sessions depending on the theoretical orientation of the counselor and the diagnosis of the client (McMinn, 2011, 81). In Danielle’s session I would use McMinn thoughts on establishing a healthy sense of self. Prayer maybe the perfect illustration to get Danielle beyond her human tendency and focus on a state of self-forgetfulness. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. This would get Danielle’s eyes off herself and onto a loving savior (McMinn, 2011, 95). I believe because the parents used scripture to justify harsh treatment, it can be used by the Christian counselor to help establish a healing relationship. The article was about when Christian counselor can integrate the use of prayer and scripture. He believes that both models are a major approach for professional integrated practice. His core points on the matter were the applicable and ethical use of prayer, how prayer can help with inner healing, and how the CBT approach develops an empathic relationship with the client (Tan, 2011). Prayer would be the key for Danielle because it is one of ways to communicating with God and it also establishes a relationship with Him as well.
