1.2 Organisation Structure (Key elements)

An organization structure can be determined by few keys elements which are work specialization, departmentalization, centralization or decentralization and lastly formalization. Work specialization is defined as the distribution of working activities into specific tasks for an individual. It plays an essential role in McDonald’s (Montenegro, E. 2015) by dividing their employees to do different tasks to ensure the restaurant to be effective and efficient. The number of work specializations of McDonald’s is high due to the specified positions given to the employees. For instance, the cashiers in the restaurants take order and receive payment from the customers, while the Drive-Thru cashiers take orders

McDonald’s uses divisional departmentalization (where the jobs are being grouped by product, services and geographical location) (Hassan et al. 2018) due to its variety of products, services and its geographical location. McDonald’s consists of various products such as burgers, fries, ice-cream even fried chicken and so on. Besides, McDonald’s also provides 24-hours services in all the franchise branches so that customers can eat anytime, and this service also helps in increasing the sales of the company. Furthermore, this company has covered a massive geographical region where about 120 countries are having McDonald fast food restaurants.

Centralization is where the decision making power is made solely by the top management in a hierarchical level, while decentralization is where the decision making power spreads from the top management to the middle or lower level management in a hierarchical level. Face to face communication is a communication process that involves a sender and a receiver. During the communication process, the sender delivers the messages through a communication channel to the receiver, then decodes the messages and gives feedback to the sender. This communication process is fast, clear and allows the employees to converse and exchange views freely and fairly.
