2020 Aspirational Goals Under the five key area, McDonald’s attached what they call “2020 Aspirational Goals” to three of the key areas, food, in which the 2020 Aspirational goal is to provide, balanced choices such as serving 100% more fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy, or whole grains, while reducing salt/sodium, sugar, saturated fat or calories across their menu. The second key area, sourcing, the 2020 Aspirational Goal is to source all of their food and packaging sustainably. In order to do this, they are supporting sustainable beef production, supporting 100% of coffee, palm oil, and fish production. They are utilizing 100% of fiber-based packaging from recycled sources. The third key area, planet, 2020 Aspirational Goal is to develop and operate the most environmentally efficient McDonald’s restaurants by increasing energy efficiency by 20% in company-owned restaurants and by increasing the amount of in-restaurant recycling to 50% and minimize waste. The other two key areas, people and community are part of McDonald’s core value and have been for over 50 years. In 2012-2013, when McDonald’s developed their five key areas or pillars of focus for sustainability and implemented their 2020 Aspirational Goals, they called the report, McDonald’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report. The latest version available for view is McDonald’s 2014 report, which the name changed again, called The Good Business Report.

    The reason why we believed this was a good approach to the situation is that with dwindling down their menu, they can start to focus on producing quality hamburgers, their core competency.
