Reading 41: Why, despite the emphasis on standardization and uniformity, might McDonald’s avoid making their entire service automatic? Yes, because they take advantage of the human capacity to respond to circumstances flexible. McDonald’s does want to provide at least a simulacrum of the Human attribute to warmth, friendliness, and recognition. For that reason, not only workers movement but also their words, demeanor, and attitudes are subject to managerial control. McDonald also wants to provide its customers with a uniformly pleasant McDonald’s experience; through friendliness, deference diligence, and good cheer through a variety of socialization and social control techniques. The concept of the glass escalator that provides an important and useful framework for men in women’s occupation is the general warm welcome men received. This warming welcome stands in stark contrast to the cold reception women receive from men occupation. Another concept is that men frequently have supervisor of the same sex, and so they enjoy a gendered bond with the supervisor in the context of a collegial work environment. These factors often converge, facilitating men’s access to higher-status positions and producing the glass escalator effect. On the other hand women have difficulties with mentorship, and blocked access to social networks when they do men’s work. Another concept is that men are presumed to not really suit to do women’s work. Sometimes patient confused male nurses as doctors and they are granted more authority and responsibility than their women counterparts, reflecting the idea that, as men is inherently more competent. Men desire to differentiate themselves from women and disassociate from femininity of their work is a key process that facilitates their ride on the glass
