McDonalds is seen as one of the main, if not the main, retailer in the fast food industry. Their adaptability and willingness to change has helped them greatly in expanding their business into the international markets. McDonalds first restaurant was opened in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955 after Ray Kroc visited Dick and Mac McDonalds restaurant and immediately wanted to franchise it. By 1959, McDonalds had opened 100 restaurants and sold over 100 million hamburgers and by 1963 the number of restaurants had risen to over 500.In 1967, McDonalds made its move into the international market by opening a restaurant in Canada and Puerto Rico and by 1983 they had moved into 32 different countries. To combat these weaknesses, McDonalds have lowered their prices slightly so as to achieve maximum profit and customer satisfaction, by adding to the menu they have made greater variety and given the customer more choice. Finally they attempted to create a healthy image through introducing the ‘veggie’ burger and tofu burgers.
According to the SWOT analysis, McDonald’s opportunities lay in their ability to increase the number of outlets. They accomplished this and today there are more than 900 restaurants across Australia. This is a great example of McDonalds using their strengths and opportunities to great effect. Of course, McDonalds carried out a lot of market research in Australia also and constructed a SWOT analysis based on the results. In this analysis, McDonalds found that their strengths incorporated their brand image as well as having the largest market share, large advertising budget and efficient restaurant management. McDonalds became to top fast food outlet in Australia relatively quickly with the help of their already strong brand image and efficient management of resources.     The reason why we believed this was a good approach to the situation is that with dwindling down their menu, they can start to focus on producing quality hamburgers, their core competency.
