Mcdonaldization In Higher Education

McDonaldization is a thing that has encompassed lots of the things in our lives whether things we do or places we go. Whether we stop and think about it’s existence and recognize it McDonaldization is still there and even the things it plays a part in can seem very natural almost as if they were independent from concepts like McDonaldization. Higher education is one such place this takes place and is a great example of how McDonaldization affects all different kinds of niches across the world and even in governments. The first part of McDonaldization that is evident in higher education is efficiency. Colleges whether big, small, private, or public have to enroll a certain number of students as well as graduate a certain number of students. To do this schools have to hire more teachers and reduce the number of students allowed to maximize their efficiency. Although most schools do a great job at not doing this as regulations get tighter and funding become more difficult some schools are starting to mindlessly take this approach without possibly realizing or meaning to. To stay open even as a state sponsored public school schools are required to survive on a budget and if they are not able to they will cut programs and will be downsized. This can put a heavy load on the school since if they are required to get more students to enroll, then teach them with the same funding and resources they had from previous years with possibly 100s or even a 1000 plus more students. As this progresses college may start to lean towards easy ways out such as more and even larger lecture classes, taking out expensive parts of courses such as buying cheap lab equipment, and stretching teachers thin by making them teach more classes even if they are not as qualified as other more expensive teachers who could do a better
