In his essay Examining the Presence of Advocacy and Commercial Websites in Research Essays of First-Year Composition Students, Randall McClure discusses how students struggle with finding and properly using materials for research. According to Mcclure “the percentage of web based sources used by students in this study is 55 percent” (McClure 2009) Electronic sources, have become a student's best friend because they are more accessible and easier to locate. McClure’s research supports this because he states “25 percent of sources used from the internet are PDF articles”. Although students use these types of resources, it still does not aid students between deciphering the difference between an advocacy website and a commerical website. Due to their struggling this is the reason why students are not able to reach their full academic potential. McClure’s essay is proof that students do not receive all the support in locating reputable sources and using them effectively. I will be the first to admit that 90 percent of my research on papers come from internet sources and that’s mainly due to my personal struggles with finding articles that are reputable. I was taught to enter your topic in Google and the first thing that pops up is your first source..Being taught this way has only stunted the way I look for sources because not only am I not making sure these internet sources are legit but I also lack the understanding of what my topic is really about. One thing that stuck out to me in McClure’s essay was the student answers on how to evaluate the bias of sources because in my high school websites like that were the ones that landed us in the dean’s office for plagiarism. In both high school and EN 101 I feel like I received some training in how to evaluate the bias of sources but I don’t retain information that well, so that has caused me to
