According to professor of English Joan Gordon, in “Surviving the Survivor,” Art Spiegelman breaks rules that dictate how Holocaust literature is to be criticized. Defined by authors Jacob Glatstein, Israel Knox, and Samuel Margoshes in their 1975 book An Anthology of Holocaust Literature, these rules are meant to confine such criticism to legislative analysis as opposed to a description (Gordon, 81). Interest in learning these rules about Holocaust writing is my first reason for researching this article. They suggest pronounced ethnographic barriers meant to commemorate Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Second, while I admire the way Maus and Maus II are written, I wanted to enhance the maturity of my perspective by researching Gordon’s contrasting…

Today, whether on television, the internet, radio, newspapers, billboards, or in theaters, art can be found just about everywhere. In Plato's time, however, art would have been a lot more scarce. For example, instead of being written in books, poetry would generally take the form of spoken word, especially during festivals and events. Plato believed, however, that these forms of art including poetry, tragedies, and paintings were actually harmful to the average man or woman, and that these arts were dangerous due to the glamorization of outward appearances and irresponsible behaviour. He believed that art only reflected these outward appearances, and not necessarily the reality.…

Peter Bagge’s Hate comics were published as the underground comics movement was ending and a new alternative comics movement was taking shape. While the issues of Hate give all the appearances of being geared towards a male audience, the exclusive alternative nature of the comics allowed for a significant male and female audience that allowed readers to identify themselves within the characters’ self-critical reflection and distain for mainstream media and peoples characterized their internal monologues. By creating a persona in the stories’ text and within the editor and letter spaces that embraced some of the misogyny and patriotism that Buddy satires while embracing, Bagge was able to maintain the ironic filter of alternative comics that…

In a Ted talk titled “Confessions of a depressed comic,” 19 year-old comedian and mental health activist Kevin Breel states that every 30 seconds, someone commits suicide. This adds up to almost 3,000 deaths every day. According to the CDC’s suicide datasheet, an estimated 9.3 million adults in the US reported having suicidal thoughts in 2013. That’s 3.9% of the entire population of the United States. The graphic novel follows the life of Vladek and Anja Spiegelman and the struggles, the loss and the consequences WWII had on their family and the strict ways of raising Art Spiegelman, and the effects it had on his childhood. Ever since comics first became popular in the 1930s, they were viewed as something for children’s entertainment. Comics were fun to read, but served no real purpose as a source of literature. Before the semester started, I assumed everyone communicated with each other using the same language, or even body movements, but as time progressed with our fandom assignments, I realized the community that shares the same fandom can say terms or phrases and they will understand each other. For example, when I hear the quote “With great power comes great responsibility.” For most that share the Marvel fandom, the majority will be able to reply back where that quote came from, which is the “Amazing Spiderman.” Before the remake. When the course first started, my research involved the search engine “Google” but with low results of what I was searching for, however I did learn how Marvel first started as well as their comeback when they almost…
